Hagar and Ishmael (Print)

from $22.00

It was a difficult time in the days of Sarah and Abraham, when women were considered of a lesser status depending on their position with the head of household. Hagar was the servant of Sarah, and a gift from the Egyptian king with whom Sara and Abraham spent some time with in the past. Sarah, with her foolish state of mind, had decided to do what many people do - she tried to interpret and bring about something that only Yahweh could make clear and bring about. Her impatience caused her to give Hagar to Abraham. Hagar’s role was to bear Abraham a child, preferably a boy, so he could carry on his father’s legacy and inherit the blessings.

Sarah’s plan backfired, and she ended up having resentment and anger towards Hagar out of jealousy. Hagar had to deal with a lot, and she still served in the role of servant. Hagar didn’t have anything to say about her position or if she even wanted to have Ishmael.

This water-color painting depicted a moment when Hagar stood wondering whether Yahweh was going to bless her child and keep her alive. This was before she had been permanently sent away by Sarah. She had been mistreated, and sought to run away. Even though it had already become very apparent, through gossip and Abraham’s own decree, that Yahweh was going to keep His special promise of the Christ’s lineage through Abraham and Sarah’s son, and not through Hagar’s seed. There was still a need for Yahweh to move on behalf of Hagar and Ishmael, because all of Abraham’s seed was blessed. No matter one prophecy, Yahweh is still a loving and caring true God, and One who will take care of any parent, any child and any person that seeks Yahweh’s help and guidance.

It is a wonderful truth that the true God, Yahweh is more than capable to work through others’ errors, willfully wrong actions and correct actions to still fulfill His Word.
